Things That Should Not Exist Part 4: Job Postings Without Pay Listed

Indeed, Ziprecruiter, just the mention of sifting through these sites endless piles of job applications is enough to get anyone heated. The countless job postings that seem to repeat themselves: entry-level positions that require a Master's degree and 5 years of experience, the fully remote position but you must be located within 25 miles of the office and come in on rotating weekends, or the ones that claim to pay a "competitive salary" without ever mentioning the actual number. But let's focus on a particular pet peeve: job postings that don't list the pay.

Is it too much to ask for transparency? As job seekers, we're expected to provide all sorts of personal information, complete countless background checks, job applications, cover letters, and jump through hoops doing the latest fad "skill tests" required through the job site for your application to be completed, I'm not saying make sure someone's a competent person but come on not every job application requires a 20-30 online skills test over made up scenarios, just to be considered, to be considered for a position. And yet, many companies can't even be upfront about how much they're willing to pay.

Some job postings might list a "range" for the starting pay, let's be honest if you match the job description down too the font the recruiter used while frantically writing the job posting from their car after getting off an interview they also hosted in the car while driving, it would not matter there no chance you're getting any past the the first 15% of that pay range regardless of the experience, education, or skills you may have.

As someone who's spent far too much time on job boards, I know how frustrating it can be to waste hours submitting applications and resumes, only to find out that you'd actually make out better if you were paid in peanuts. It's especially insulting when the job posting boasts about the company culture and how you'll be part of a "family", as if that somehow makes up for the fact that you won't be able to afford rent.

So please, job posters of the world, let's make a deal. You be upfront about the pay, and maybe you'll get people to want to stay for your company for more than three months at a time, or atleast make your department aware of the problem is when cost of living for a single income household is roughly $15.50 / hour working full time for minimum expenses in a state and your starting pay ranges from $10-$14 / hour people quite literally cannot afford to work for your company. If you're main recruiting tactic is well let's just get them through the door and hope they don't leave maybe you should be taking a minute address the issue at it's core because just keeping an endless trickle of people replacing the same position is such a massive waste of time and resources that it's easily offset by being transparent and open with your wages and if they deter job applicants that's on you.
